What’s New
On July 17th, the Department of Natural Resources closed a public comment period to get feed back from the public about what Governor Doyle can do to protect our national forests. WISPIRG collected over 8500 public comments calling on Governor Doyle to protect the 69,000 acres of wilderness areas in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forests that the Bush Administration has opened up for logging and development. Read WISPIRG’s official comments and e-mail Governor Doyle and urge him to protect the last wild forests in Wisconsin.
How You Can Help
Please take a moment to e-mail the governor and urge him to protect our last remaining wild forests in Wisconsin.
Brief Summary
Wisconsin’s national forests are home to some of the most striking beauty on earth and provide us with unparallel recreational opportunities. Less than 2% of our forests are still wild and the rest have already been logged or developed. Last year, the Bush Administration repealed the Roadless Area Conservation Rule which would have protected these last remaining wilderness areas.
Governor Doyle now has the power to protect the last wild places in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest by petitioning the U.S. Forest Service to keep these areas off limits to logging and development. We need to make sure that Governor Doyle commits to protecting all of the original 69,000 acres of roadless areas in Wisconsin’s Forests.
The DNR will be accepting public comments this summer about the scope of what the Governor should do. We need to make sure that that we send the message that these areas need to be fully protected so that future generations won’t lose these areas forever. More.
