We're committed to rebuilding and protecting a democracy where everyone participates and everyone’s voice is heard.

WISPIRG is working to reduce the influence of big money by encouraging the active participation of small donors in our elections. That way candidates are accountable to, and dependent on, the people — not moneyed interests. We’re also working to implement the use of modern technology to ensure that registering to vote is easy, accurate and automatic.

Our Approach

We know the problems facing our democracy are large and deeply rooted. But we also know that there are changes we can make immediately that will pave the way for restoring our democracy. We’re researching and advocating for new ways to protect and restore our democracy.

  • We’re all better off with a democracy of, by and for the people. A democracy where everyone has a voice and everyone is represented. Through our research, advocacy and organizing, we’re working to make sure our election policies and practices reflect those priorities. And we’re working to build support behind this commonsense point of view.

  • Focus on concrete change. To protect our democracy, we need to make progress now, one step at a time. Our focus is on making a difference in public policy and in our lives, not just making a statement.

  • Figure out what works. Through our national network, we’ve successfully advocated for automatic voter registration, fair redistricting practices, empowering small donors at the federal, state and local levels, and for corporate disclosure of political spending. We have a 45-plus year track record of figuring out solutions that will work and advocating for them until we get results.

  • Find common ground. Even in this deeply divided moment, democracy is a core tenant of America. Our advocates seek out common ground and work with members of both parties. We build coalitions that include people from all walks of life and political perspectives. As a part of a national network, our organizers and canvassers engage literally hundreds of thousands of people.
