Consumer Group Denounces Federal Proposal to Stall Clean Car Standards

The Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) and the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration today proposed rolling back the “Clean Car” fuel economy standards, which, if fully implemented, could eliminate more than 2 billion metric tons of emissions and save consumers significant money at the gas pump. Wisconsin Public Interest Research Group (WISPIRG) Director Peter Skopec issued the following statement in response.

Rent-to-Own Carve-Outs Good for Predatory Lenders, Bad for Wisconsinites

A bill moving through the state legislature would eliminate crucial consumer protections and transparency requirements for rent-to-own (RTO) customers by exempting the entire RTO industry from the Wisconsin Consumer Act. Consumer attorneys and advocates, faith constituencies, and groups representing low-income clients vehemently oppose these carve-outs that will encourage predatory RTO lenders to operate in the state.

Congress is seeking to undo new protections that would keep payday and car title lenders from trapping consumers in a spiral of growing, high interest debt. These crucial safeguards were finalized just weeks ago by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Reversing them would put millions of Wisconsinites and Americans across the country at risk.

For over 30 years, the WISPIRG Foundation has conducted an annual survey of toy safety, which has led to over 150 recalls and other regulatory actions over the years, and has helped educate the public and policymakers on the need for continued action to protect the health and wellbeing of children. This year, WISPIRG Foundation staff once again looked for potentially unsafe toys.
