Protect Healthcare Workers

COVID-19 cases continue to rage across the country, but our healthcare workers don't have enough of the equipment that they need to protect themselves and care for their patients.

According to the American Health Care Association, three quarters of its members are running out of personal protective equipment (PPE) like masks and gowns, and 60% have resorted to reusing or making their own equipment.

U.S. PIRG Response to "Preparing for the Next Pandemic" White Paper

The U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions sought feedback on its white paper entitled, "Preparing for the Next Pandemic." U.S. PIRG's response is that the war against COVID-19 is far from over. CFPB complaint volume sets another record in May

As of today, consumer complaints to the CFPB set a third straight monthly record in May, with 35,093 complaints reported. Complaints about credit reporting lead by far, followed by debt collection, credit card and mortgage complaints. Job and income losses during the pandemic are hitting families hard.

I’ve been reading the CFPB’s mail. It’s okay, you can too. It’s public. Not surprisingly, the latest CFPB consumer complaints paint a grim picture of the pandemic’s effect on family finances. I ask: Why isn’t the CFPB doing more to help struggling consumers?

Mortgage servicers failed Americans during the last recession. And if early data from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is any indication, history may well be on its way to repeating.

Consumer, Banking Groups Applaud Bill to Exempt Economic Impact Payments from Garnishment

U.S. PIRG has joined leading consumer and banking organizations to applaud a bi-partisan Senate bill to broaden protections in the recent COVID-19 stimulus package. Under the CARES Act, Congress exempted Economic Impact Payments from offset for debts owed to federal and state agencies, except in the case of child support, but did not exempt them from court-ordered garnishment to pay creditors.
